2018 Effect of Chemical Demineralization on Combustion Behaviour of Lignite

Turkey has considerable lignite reserves. Lignite exploitation and utilisation as a fuel provide large fraction of the needs in Turkish energy system. However, most of the lignite has characteristics of high mineral matter and sulphur content, low calorific value and present environmental problems when they are burned in domestic and industrial systems. In this work, volatiles and char combustion behaviours of the pellets prepared from Kangal Lignite pretreated with various acid solutions (HCl, H2SO4, H3BO3, HF and HNO3) were investigated in an experimental fixed bed combustion system. Combustion behaviour of treated lignite was compared with original lignite. The results of this study showed that the maximum ash removal was obtained by using HCI (61.6%), and the reduction in ash content occurred by chemical treatment increased combustion efficiency.
